This interactive online learning experience teaches you what a strengths-based approach is and the reflective process to apply this approach in your work with families.

Module Outline

  • Unit 1: Use a Strengths-based Approach
    This interactive online learning experience teaches you what a strengths-based approach is, and the reflective process to apply this approach in your work with families. Estimated time to complete: 1 professional development clock hour.
  • Unit 2: Listen Actively
    This interactive online learning experience provides an orientation to active listening, including being present, paraphrasing, and open and closed questions. Estimated time to complete: 1 professional development clock hour.
  • Unit 3: Take Informed Action
    This interactive online learning experience talks about Relationship-based Practices, including the reflective process to use these practices in your work with families. Estimated time to complete: 1 professional development clock hour.
  • Unit 4: Practice: Building Relationships with Families
    This 5-7 minute interactive simulation previews the experiences that will be available in each module via simulation to practice and enhance family engagement skills. Estimated time to complete: 0.5 professional development clock hour.
  • Unit 5: Practice: Starting with Strengths
    This simulation includes a supervisor/staff conversation in which they reflect on the staff’s engagement with a family. Estimated time to complete: 1 professional development clock hour.

  • Learning Extensions Guide
    This guide provides additional activities you can use to extend your learning about the content in the “Use a Strengths-based Approach” unit. It includes activities you can complete by yourself, with a partner, and with a group.

Practice: Building Relationships with Families Simulation

This practice is framed as a face-to-face role play in which learners will be able to choose what to say to the family and see how the family responds. This simulation focuses on an interaction in which the provider is engaging with a family to build their relationship.

Practice: Starting with Strengths
